The standard Chandigarh–Kinnaur route follows NH5 through Shimla, then continues on the same NH5 (Hindustan-Tibet Road) past Rampur, Jeori, and Wangtu into Kinnaur district. Wangtu (~280 km from Chandigarh) is where the road character changes fundamentally — from a reasonably wide mountain highway to a narrow, single-lane cliff-edge track carved above the roaring Sutlej gorge. The Sutlej River drops hundreds of metres below the road in many sections, and overhanging rocks and waterfalls are common features. This is one of the most dramatic but also most demanding driving environments in India.
While the Chandigarh–Kinnaur journey can technically be done in one day (departing Chandigarh at 5 AM, arriving Reckong Peo by 5–6 PM), we strongly recommend the two-day plan. Sangla Valley is a wide, lush valley carved by the Baspa River, flanked by pine forests and terraced apple orchards, with the ancient Kamru Fort standing above the village. Chitkul is India's last inhabited village before the Tibet border — a tiny, dreamlike settlement at 3,450 m on the Baspa River with snow peaks rising directly behind it. May to October is the prime travel window for Kinnaur. June is ideal for lush green valleys and moderate temperatures. August and September are the apple harvest season — the most visually spectacular time, with orchards heavy with red Kinnauri apples. The HTR can see brief closures due to rockfall in July–August monsoon periods. November to April sees snow block the higher roads — Chitkul is inaccessible, though Kalpa and Reckong Peo can be reached by experienced drivers in suitable vehicles. Essential advice for one of India's most remote and spectacular valley drives
Even though Chandigarh is 120 km closer than Delhi, a Shimla halt on Day 1 is still strongly recommended. Arrive fresh in Kinnaur, and your driver will be rested for the demanding HTR section.
Never book a standard outstation driver for Kinnaur. The HTR demands specific experience — narrow roads, sheer drops, and low-gear mountain driving skills that only come from repeated Kinnaur trips. All our drivers are certified for this route.

Reckong Peo is at 2,670 m and Chitkul at 3,450 m. Spend at least one night at Kalpa or Reckong Peo before proceeding to Sangla or Chitkul to avoid altitude sickness (AMS).
ATMs in Kinnaur Valley are limited and frequently non-functional. Withdraw sufficient cash in Chandigarh or Shimla before entering the valley. Carry altitude sickness medication (Diamox) and a basic first-aid kit.
