The Chandigarh to Manali route is one of the most scenic and enjoyable highway drives in all of Himachal Pradesh. Shorter than the Delhi–Manali journey by over 200 km, this route is favoured by travellers flying into Chandigarh or those already in Punjab who want to reach the Valley of the Gods quickly. The drive takes you through the Shivalik foothills, across the Gobind Sagar reservoir, into the ancient temple town of Mandi, and finally through the magnificent Kullu Valley before arriving in Manali. Hire Himachal Cab's Chandigarh to Manali taxi service offers the most comfortable and reliable way to make this journey — with experienced mountain drivers at the wheel.
The road distance from Chandigarh to Manali is approximately 310 km and the journey takes around 7 to 9 hours via NH21 through Bilaspur, Mandi, and Kullu. The NH21 is the backbone of the Chandigarh–Manali highway and one of the most scenic national highways in India. Leaving Chandigarh, the road passes through Ropar and enters the Shivalik foothills, then crosses the Gobind Sagar reservoir — a stunning artificial lake formed by the Bhakra Nangal Dam — near Bilaspur. Beyond Bilaspur, the road climbs through Sundernagar and enters Mandi, a charming riverside temple town often called the "Varanasi of the Hills." From Mandi, NH21 follows the Beas River upstream through the Kullu Valley — a dramatic gorge section with river views on one side and steep forested slopes on the other — all the way to Manali.
Departing early — between 5:00 AM and 6:00 AM from Chandigarh — is highly recommended. An early start puts you in Bilaspur by 8 AM for a leisurely breakfast, in Mandi by 10 AM, and in Manali well before evening. This allows a full afternoon to check in, rest, and explore Manali before dinner. For summer travel (May–June), an early departure also means you avoid the afternoon heat in the lower valleys. In winter (November–February), early morning departures are especially important as mountain roads can be icy by late afternoon and visibility can reduce with fog.
Bilaspur (~100 km from Chandigarh) is the ideal midway breakfast stop on the Chandigarh–Manali route. The town sits beside the Gobind Sagar reservoir, and the drive around the lake's edge is one of the most beautiful stretches on NH21. The Vyas Gufa (cave of Sage Vyas), Markandey Mahadev Temple, and the scenic lakeside are worth a brief stop. Several good dhabas and restaurants serve hearty Himachali food near Bilaspur. Mandi (~210 km) is another excellent halt for lunch and a quick visit to the famous Trilokinath Temple.
For 2–3 day Manali trips, a round-trip cab booking with your driver waiting in Manali is the most convenient option. For travellers continuing onwards to Rohtang Pass, Spiti Valley, or Leh, a one-way drop in Manali at ₹3,720 is extremely cost-effective. We also offer Manali–Rohtang–Spiti onward packages — ask at the time of booking for a combined itinerary quote.
Call +91-6230261947 or WhatsApp with your Chandigarh pickup address, travel date and time, number of passengers, and vehicle preference. We confirm instantly and share driver details before departure. For peak season travel (May–June and December–January) and Rohtang Pass days, we strongly recommend booking 3–5 days in advance as vehicle availability tightens considerably.
Make your mountain cab experience smoother with these traveller-tested tips
Leaving Chandigarh at dawn gets you through the lower valleys in cool conditions and puts you in Manali by early afternoon — giving a full evening to settle in.
The drive alongside the Gobind Sagar reservoir near Bilaspur is breathtaking — don't rush through it. Stop for photos at the designated viewpoints along the lakeside stretch.
Mandi (~210 km) is the perfect lunch or tea stop. The Madras Café near the bus stand and several riverside dhabas serve excellent food with stunning Beas River views.
If visiting Rohtang Pass, get your NGT permit online 2–3 days in advance. Daily vehicle slots are strictly limited — last-minute permits are rarely available in peak season.
Temperature drops significantly as you gain altitude beyond Mandi. Keep a light jacket accessible even in summer — Manali evenings at 2,050 m are always pleasantly cool.
Kullu (40 km before Manali) is famous for its handwoven woollen shawls. Stop at the Bhuttico or HPMC weaving centre for authentic Kullu shawls at government-fixed prices.
