The Shimla–Manali highway begins on NH5 — the same road that connects Shimla to Kalka — and descends through the lower Shivalik ranges past Solan and Bilaspur. Near Bilaspur (~80 km from Shimla), it passes the beautiful Gobind Sagar reservoir before joining NH21 and climbing into the Mandi district. May to June and September to October are the best times for this journey — roads are fully open, weather is pleasant, and the mountain scenery is at its finest. July and August bring monsoon rains that can cause landslides and road blockages on NH21, particularly near Mandi and the Beas gorge. Starting early from Shimla gets you through the morning mountain traffic and puts you in Manali by 2–3 PM — time for a rest before exploring Old Manali or Vashisht in the evening.
Mandi (~140 km) is the perfect midway lunch stop. The riverside dhabas near Trilokinath Temple serve excellent Himachali food. A 45-minute stop here is highly recommended.
The NH21 section between Mandi and Kullu through the Beas gorge is narrow, dramatic, and slow. Budget extra time and don't stress — the scenery rewards the pace. Several waterfalls are worth quick photo stops.
If visiting Rohtang Pass from Manali, book your NGT online permit 2–3 days in advance. Daily vehicle slots are strictly limited and unavailable last-minute during peak season (May–June).
After Shimla's cool climate, Manali at 2,050 m is equally or even cooler — especially post-sunset. Pack appropriately for the season. Solang Valley and Rohtang Pass are significantly colder.
