The Hindustan-Tibet Road (NH5 / NH22) is one of the most famous and formidable mountain highways in India. Built as a strategic military road along the Sutlej River gorge, it connects Shimla to the Tibet border at Shipki La. The section from Wangtu into Kinnaur district is particularly dramatic — a single-lane track carved into sheer cliff faces, often with a 300–500 metre drop on one side and the roaring Sutlej River far below. Rock overhangs, waterfalls across the road, and narrow passing bays are features of this route. An experienced Kinnaur driver is not optional — it is essential. Indian nationals do not require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit most of Kinnaur Valley including Reckong Peo, Kalpa, Sangla, and Chitkul. However, for areas beyond Pooh and towards the Tibet border (Sumdo, Khab, Shipki La), a Protected Area Permit (PAP) is required from the Sub-Divisional Magistrate's office in Reckong Peo. Foreign nationals require a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for all of Kinnaur beyond Rampur. The Delhi–Kinnaur journey is almost always best planned as a two-day trip. Day 1: Delhi to Shimla (350 km, ~7 hours) — arrive in the evening, enjoy Shimla's Mall Road, rest overnight. Day 2: Shimla to Kinnaur (230 km, ~7 hours on the HTR) — this second day is the most spectacular, entering Kinnaur district after Wangtu and arriving at your destination — Reckong Peo, Kalpa, Sangla, or Chitkul — by late afternoon. May to October is the primary travel window for Kinnaur Valley. The apple orchards are at their most spectacular in August and September — the entire valley turns red and gold as the famous Kinnauri apples ripen. The HTR can face landslide closures during July and August monsoon — our team tracks conditions daily and advises travellers accordingly. November to April sees most of the higher roads close due to snow. The stretch beyond Nako (towards Spiti) is only accessible May to October.
Essential advice for travelling to one of India's most remote and rewarding valleys
Do not attempt Delhi to Kinnaur in a single day. Halt in Shimla overnight and drive the HTR fresh on Day 2. Fatigue on the HTR is genuinely dangerous — rest is non-negotiable on this route.

The HTR is prone to rockfall and landslides, especially July–September. Always call us 24 hours before departure for a road condition update. We will advise delays or alternative scheduling if needed.
Reckong Peo sits at 2,670 m and Kalpa at 2,960 m. Spend at least one night here before going higher to Sangla (2,680 m) or Chitkul (3,450 m) to avoid altitude sickness.
ATMs in Kinnaur are limited and often out of service. Carry sufficient cash. Also carry altitude sickness medication (Diamox), a first-aid kit, and warm clothing even in summer — nights at altitude are cold.
