Kaza is a high-altitude destination. Prepare well to enjoy it fully.
Kaza is at 3,800 m. Do NOT rush the journey. A night halt at Reckong Peo (~2,670 m) or Nako (~3,600 m) is strongly recommended to acclimatise before entering Kaza.
Foreign nationals require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Spiti Valley. Indians do not need a permit but must carry valid photo ID. Our drivers are fully aware of all checkposts.
BSNL is the only network with reasonable coverage in Spiti Valley. Airtel, Jio, and Vi have very limited or no signal. Download offline maps (Google Maps or Maps.me) before departure.

The Shimla route to Kaza passes through Kinnaur — one of Himachal Pradesh's most spectacular districts. The road hugs the sheer walls of the Sutlej gorge, passing through ancient apple orchards, Buddhist gompas, and villages where residents wear the distinctive Kinnauri cap. An early start from Delhi gets you to Shimla before traffic peaks and ensures you cross mountain sections in daylight. Do not plan to drive on Spiti mountain roads after dark — ever.
Do not attempt Delhi to Kaza in a single non-stop drive. The distances and altitude gain make it unsafe and exhausting. An overnight at Reckong Peo or Nako is strongly recommended — and makes for a far better experience.
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a real risk at 3,800 m. Spend a night at Reckong Peo (~2,670 m) or Nako (~3,600 m) to allow your body to adjust before entering Kaza. Symptoms of AMS include headache, nausea, and fatigue.
