About Varkala
Varkala is unlike any other beach in Kerala — perhaps unlike any beach in India. Where most Kerala beaches are flat and open, Varkala's defining feature is its dramatic red and orange laterite cliffs that rise steeply from the sea, with the beach tucked at their base and a long promenade of cafes, yoga studios, Ayurveda centres and guesthouses running along the cliff edge.
The Papanasam Beach below the cliffs is considered sacred — "Papanasam" literally means "destroyer of sins" — and pilgrims come to scatter the ashes of departed relatives in the sea here. The combination of spiritual significance, dramatic geology and a laid-back international traveller culture gives Varkala a unique, irreplaceable atmosphere that visitors describe as utterly addictive.
Watching the sunset from the Varkala cliff edge — with the orange cliffs glowing, the sea turning gold and a fresh coconut in hand — is one of those travel moments that stays with you forever.
Must-Do Experiences
From cliff-edge sunsets to paragliding over the Arabian Sea — Varkala's experiences are as dramatic as its geology.
The 2 km cliff-top promenade is Varkala's beating heart — lined with open-air cafes, hammock restaurants, Ayurveda massage centres and souvenir shops. The view from the cliff edge over the Arabian Sea, especially at sunset, is simply magnificent.
The beach at the cliff base is one of Kerala's most sacred — where pilgrims perform memorial rituals for departed souls. The 2,000-year-old Janardhana Swami Temple (Lord Vishnu) sits atop the cliff — one of Kerala's most important ancient temples with stunning sea views.
Varkala's cliff is studded with quality yoga studios offering morning classes with sea views — from Hatha and Ashtanga to Yin and meditation. Authentic Ayurveda centres offer everything from a 60-minute oil massage to a full 7-day Panchakarma detox programme.
The cliff provides a natural launch point for tandem paragliding — soaring over the beach and sea is a truly extraordinary perspective on Varkala's drama. Below, the beach offers surfing lessons, jet skiing, parasailing and kayaking on the calmer northern end.

Day-by-Day Plan
A perfect 3-day beach escape — cliffs, sacred ghats, water sports and pure Arabian Sea sunsets.
Pickup from Trivandrum Airport or station (51 km, ~1.5 hrs). Check in to cliff-side guesthouse or resort. Afternoon stroll along the Varkala North Cliff promenade — explore the cafes, Ayurveda shops and sea-view terraces. Visit the Janardhana Swami Temple at the cliff tip (remove shoes). Descend to Papanasam Beach for an evening dip. Back to cliff for the sunset — find a cliff-edge cafe table and watch the sun sink into the Arabian Sea with a fresh coconut. Overnight Varkala.
Early morning yoga class on the cliff (most studios open 7–8 AM) with the sea spread out below — one of the best yoga settings in Kerala. Breakfast at a cliff cafe. Morning — choose your adventure: tandem paragliding off the cliff (30–45 min flight over the sea), surfing lesson on the beach or jet-skiing. Afternoon visit to Sivagiri Mutt — the ashram of social reformer Sree Narayana Guru, a significant pilgrimage site on the hill above Varkala. Evening Ayurveda massage (1.5 hrs). Overnight Varkala.
Early morning holy dip at Papanasam Beach — the most auspicious time according to Hindu tradition. Breakfast at cliff cafe. Browse the cliff market for Kashmiri shawls, essential oils, handmade jewellery and Kerala handicrafts. Optional: Kappil Lake backwater canoe (8 km from Varkala) — a lesser-known gem where a lagoon meets the sea. Drive to Trivandrum — optional visit to Padmanabhaswamy Temple (one of India's wealthiest temples) before departure. Tour concludes with the scent of salt air and orange cliffs in memory.

Travel Tips
October to March is perfect — blue skies, calm seas and comfortable temperatures. December–January is peak season with the most vibrant cliff atmosphere. Avoid June–September when monsoon brings huge waves, closed water sports and dangerous cliff edges.
Watching the Varkala sunset from the cliff edge is non-negotiable. Arrive at least 30 minutes before sunset to find the best cafe table with an unobstructed sea view. The sky turns deep orange-red matching the laterite cliffs — one of India's most photogenic natural spectacles.
Quality Ayurveda centres on the Varkala cliff book up fast — especially for evening slots. Book your massage session on arrival Day 1 for the best availability. A genuine 90-minute Abhyanga (oil massage) by a trained therapist is one of the most restorative experiences you can have.
Varkala's sea can have strong currents — always swim at the northern end of the beach where it's calmer, and follow the flag warnings. Red flags mean no swimming. The beach has lifeguards from October to March. Never swim alone near the cliffs where undercurrents are stronger.
