About the Pilgrimage
Vaishno Devi is one of the most revered Hindu shrines in India, dedicated to Maa Vaishno Devi — a manifestation of Adi Shakti. The sacred cave temple is nestled in the Trikuta Hills of Jammu & Kashmir at an elevation of 5,200 feet (1,585 m), approximately 14 km from the base camp at Katra. More than 8 million pilgrims undertake this yatra every year, making it the second most visited religious shrine in India.
The journey from Katra passes through the half-way point of Ardhkuwari — a small cave where the goddess is believed to have meditated. After darshan at the holy cave (the Pindies — three rock formations representing Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi and Maha Saraswati), pilgrims complete the yatra by visiting Bhairon Baba Temple, 1.5 km further up.
Key Shrines & Highlights
Every stop on the Vaishno Devi yatra carries profound spiritual significance — from the holy cave to the mandatory Bhairon Baba darshan.
The sacred cave of Maa Vaishno Devi at 5,200 ft in the Trikuta Mountains, housing three natural Pindies representing Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi and Maha Saraswati. The darshan queue is managed by the Shrine Board.
Located midway on the trek to the main cave, Ardhkuwari (Garbh Joon) is where Maa Vaishno Devi meditated in a narrow cave for 9 months. Devotees squeeze through the cave as a symbolic rebirth ritual.
Completing the Vaishno Devi yatra requires visiting Bhairon Baba Temple, 1.5 km above the holy cave. According to legend, Maa Vaishno Devi beheaded Bhairon Nath here — it is considered mandatory to complete the pilgrimage.
A helicopter service operates from Katra (Bhawan helipad area) to Sanjichhat, saving approximately 8 km of the uphill trek. This is ideal for elderly pilgrims, those with health conditions, or those short on time.

Traveller Guidance
Be prepared before you set out — these tips will make your pilgrimage smooth, safe and spiritually fulfilling.
The Yatra Parchi (registration slip) is mandatory. Obtain it from the online portal or counters at Katra's Bank More. Without it, pilgrims are not allowed on the trek.
The 14 km trek to the cave involves steep inclines and stone paths. Wear cushioned trekking shoes or sturdy sports shoes. Avoid chappals or sandals.
Navratri (Mar–Apr and Oct–Nov), Diwali and New Year see the maximum crowds — queues can be 24+ hours. Plan for off-peak months like Dec–Jan or Jun–Jul for shorter wait times.
Even in summer, the cave area can be cold. Evenings and nights at Katra (Sep–Mar) are chilly. Pack a light jacket and woollen layer for the trek.
