About Thekkady
Thekkady is Kerala's premier wildlife destination β centred around the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, one of India's most important tiger and elephant reserves, spread across 925 sq km of dense evergreen forests and shola grasslands in the Cardamom Hills. The sanctuary's centrepiece is the Periyar Lake β a man-made reservoir where boat safaris offer unforgettable views of elephants, bison, wild boar, sambar deer and otters coming to the water's edge.
What makes Thekkady truly special is the spice country that surrounds it. The Kumily and Thekkady area is India's spice capital β cardamom, black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and vanilla grow in abundance in the plantations that carpet the hillsides. A guided spice plantation walk through a working cardamom estate β breathing the heady fragrance of fresh spices β is one of Kerala's most sensory and memorable experiences.
The combination of wildlife safari, elephant interaction, spice garden walks, Kumily market and proximity to Munnar (91 km) makes Thekkady one of the most rewarding stops on any Kerala itinerary.
Must-Do Experiences
From the mist-covered Periyar Lake at dawn to a cardamom plantation at golden hour β Thekkady's experiences are deeply immersive.
The iconic Periyar Lake boat safari is the signature Thekkady experience β drifting quietly across the misty lake as herds of wild elephants, bison, otters and deer emerge from the forest to drink at the water's edge. Dawn and dusk boats offer the best wildlife sightings.
Walk through a working cardamom, pepper, vanilla and cinnamon plantation with an expert guide β learn to identify every spice by leaf, bark and fruit, see the harvesting process and fill bags with fresh spices at source prices. The aroma alone is worth the trip.
Visit a responsible elephant centre near Thekkady where captive elephants receive expert care. Watch the bathing ritual, feed sugarcane and learn about elephant behaviour from the mahouts. Only visit centres with ethical welfare standards β we assist in selection.
Periyar offers unique guided experiences inside the tiger reserve β bamboo rafting on the Periyar River through the forest interior, or a guided jungle border hiking trail with trained forest department guides. Elephant sightings are common on these treks.

Travel Tips
The Periyar Lake boat safari at 6β7 AM is dramatically better for wildlife than afternoon boats. Elephants and bison come to the water in the early mist β you may see herds of 20β30 elephants. Book the "Forest Department" boats over private operators for better routes.
October to May is ideal β dry season means animals concentrate around the lake. JuneβSeptember is monsoon β leeches on jungle trails and reduced visibility. The Periyar sanctuary is open year-round but wildlife sightings are significantly better in the dry months.
Thekkady/Kumily is the best place in India to buy fresh spices at source prices β often 50β70% cheaper than any city store. Buy cardamom, pepper and vanilla from Kumily market traders or directly from the plantation. Bring extra bags β you'll buy more than planned!
Choose elephant centres that prioritize animal welfare β avoid places offering riding. The best centres allow watching the morning bathing ritual, feeding with sugarcane and observing natural behaviour. Our driver will guide you to responsible operators only.
Traveller Stories
The dawn boat safari on Periyar Lake was magical β 30 wild elephants emerged from the misty forest to drink, some with babies. We were completely silent in awe. Hire Himachal Cab arranged everything seamlessly β driver, spice plantation guide, elephant centre. Perfect Thekkady trip!
The spice plantation walk was a revelation β I had no idea how cardamom, vanilla and cinnamon actually grew. Bought fresh cardamom at a fraction of Delhi prices. The bamboo rafting through the forest was eerie and beautiful. Hire Himachal Cab made Munnar + Thekkady combination perfect!
Jungle border trek with the forest department guide was extraordinary β 4 hours inside the tiger reserve, saw fresh tiger pug marks, a herd of wild elephants from 50 metres, and a leopard in a tree. Our driver organised everything and waited patiently. Outstanding service!
