Sonamarg – The Meadow of Gold

Sonamarg, meaning "Meadow of Gold," sits at 2,740 metres in the Sindh Valley and is one of Kashmir's most dramatic and awe-inspiring destinations. The name comes from the golden wildflowers that blanket its meadows in summer, set against a backdrop of towering snow-capped peaks and glaciers. It marks the last major town before the legendary Zoji La Pass into Ladakh.

From Srinagar, the 87 km drive takes you northeast through the Sindh Valley, following the turquoise Sindh River through poplar-lined roads and quaint Kashmiri villages before climbing into the high alpine scenery that surrounds Sonamarg. The approach road itself is one of the most scenic drives in the entire Kashmir Valley.

Sonamarg's defining attraction is the Thajiwas Glacier, a short pony ride from the main meadow, where visitors can walk on ancient ice surrounded by sheer mountain walls. The road beyond Sonamarg, open only in summer, leads to the dramatic Zero Point at nearly 3,500 metres, where permanent snowfields, frozen lakes and raw Himalayan wilderness create an unforgettable high-altitude experience.
