About Munnar

Munnar – Kerala's Crown Jewel

Munnar is Kerala's most celebrated hill station — a mesmerising landscape of endless tea estates, rolling emerald hills, cool mountain air and mist-draped valleys nestled in the Western Ghats at 1,600 metres above sea level. Once the summer resort of the British administration in South India, Munnar today is one of the most visited hill destinations in the country.

The Tata Tea estates that carpet the hillsides in every shade of green are Munnar's most iconic visual. But Munnar is much more than just tea — it is home to the Eravikulam National Park, where the rare Nilgiri Tahr roams freely against the backdrop of Anamudi Peak (2,695 m — the highest peak in South India). The Top Station viewpoint offers one of the most dramatic panoramas in Kerala, looking over the Tamil Nadu border.

Whether you're a honeymooner seeking misty romance, a nature lover chasing rare endemic flora, a trekker targeting Anamudi's summit, or a photographer hunting that perfect golden-hour tea garden shot — Munnar delivers it all with quiet, unhurried grace.

Travel Tips

Essential Tips for Munnar

Best: Sep–May

September–May is the ideal window. The post-monsoon months (Sep–Nov) bring lush green landscapes and clear skies. December–February is cool and misty — perfect for cozy resort stays. Avoid June–August — heavy monsoon makes roads tricky and many attractions close.

Pack Warm Clothes

Despite being in Kerala, Munnar gets genuinely cold — especially at night and early mornings. Temperatures drop to 5–10°C in winter (Dec–Jan). Pack a medium fleece or jacket, especially if visiting Top Station or staying at higher-altitude resorts.

Start Early Each Day

Munnar's mornings are pure magic — the mist in the tea gardens, the crisp air, the soft light on the plantations. Start sightseeing by 7–8 AM. Most viewpoints are best before 10 AM before clouds roll in. Early starts also avoid the afternoon tourist crowds.

Buy Tea at Source

Don't buy tea at souvenir shops at highway stops — visit the KDHP (Kerala Development and Herbal Products) outlet in Munnar town or buy directly at the Tea Museum. You'll get authentic, quality Munnar single-estate tea at better prices than roadside stalls.

I'm a landscape photographer and Munnar is simply world class. Hire Himachal Cab arranged early morning starts every day — we caught fog rolling through the tea estates at 6 AM for some of the best shots of my career. The driver understood the photography requirements perfectly. Will return!

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Q
What is the best time to visit Munnar?
The best time is September to May. September–November offers lush green landscapes post-monsoon. December–February is cool and misty — ideal for cozy resort stays with fireplace evenings. March–May is warmer but great for Eravikulam NP (open Feb–May). Avoid June–August heavy monsoon when roads become challenging and some sites close.
Q
How far is Munnar from Kochi?
Munnar is approximately 130 km from Kochi (Ernakulam) — about 3.5–4 hours by road through scenic mountain routes. The drive itself is a highlight — climbing through rubber plantations, waterfalls and dense shola forests. Our driver picks up directly from Cochin Airport (COK) or Ernakulam station.
Q
Is Munnar good for a honeymoon?
Absolutely — Munnar is one of India's top honeymoon destinations. The misty mountain landscape, intimate tea garden resorts, cool weather and romantic viewpoints create a perfect honeymoon setting. December–February is especially magical. We arrange special honeymoon packages with couple-friendly resorts and private viewpoint visits.
Q
Can we combine Munnar with Alleppey or Thekkady?
Yes — a popular combination is Munnar + Alleppey (Backwaters) in 5–6 days, or Munnar + Thekkady (Wildlife) in 4–5 days. Munnar to Alleppey is 170 km (4 hrs), Munnar to Thekkady is 91 km (2.5 hrs). We create seamless multi-destination Kerala circuits — contact us for a custom package.
Q
Is Eravikulam National Park always open?
No — Eravikulam NP is open approximately February to May (post-calving season for Nilgiri Tahr). It is closed during the monsoon (June–September) and partially during November–January for the calving season. We check the current status before your trip and suggest alternatives if it's closed during your visit.
