About Kovalam

Kovalam – Kerala's Premier Beach

Kovalam is Kerala's most famous beach destination — a cluster of three crescent-shaped bays separated by rocky headlands, located just 16 km south of Trivandrum Airport. The Lighthouse Beach (the main and most developed bay), Hawa Beach and Eve's Beach together form one of India's most complete and accessible seaside experiences.

The defining landmark is the Vizhinjam Lighthouse at the southern end — a 34-metre red-and-white tower whose beam sweeps the Arabian Sea every night. Climbing the lighthouse's 142 steps rewards visitors with sweeping views of all three Kovalam bays. The beach promenade is lined with Ayurveda centres, seafood restaurants, beach shacks and souvenir shops — making it one of the most infrastructure-rich beach experiences in Kerala.

Kovalam is also within easy reach of Trivandrum city with its world-famous Padmanabhaswamy Temple (one of India's wealthiest), the Napier Museum and the Trivandrum Zoo — making it a complete 3-day destination combining beach, culture and spirituality.

Travel Tips

Essential Tips for Kovalam

Best: Oct–Mar

October to March has calm seas, blue skies and comfortable temperatures. December–February is peak season — water sports are best, sea is calmest. Avoid June–September when monsoon brings dangerous currents. Red flag means no swimming — always check daily flag conditions.

Choose Ayurveda Carefully

Kovalam has excellent and mediocre Ayurveda centres. Look for Kerala Tourism certified centres with qualified Ayurveda doctors (not just masseuses). A proper Abhyanga uses warm medicated oils chosen based on your dosha — budget Rs.1,500–2,500 for a genuine 90-minute session.

Swim on Hawa Beach

Lighthouse Beach has stronger currents — better for watching surfers than swimming. For safe swimming with calmer water, use Hawa Beach (the northern bay). Eve's Beach is the quietest and most secluded. All three bays have lifeguards October–March.

Eat at the Beach Shacks

Kovalam's beach shacks serve outstanding fresh Kerala seafood — tiger prawns, lobster, barracuda and karimeen (pearl spot) grilled or Kerala-style. Ask to see the catch of the day before ordering. Prices are very reasonable and the setting — watching sunset while eating fresh fish — is unbeatable.

Our honeymoon in Kovalam was everything we dreamed of — the lighthouse at sunset, parasailing over the bay, a candlelit seafood dinner on the beach. Hire Himachal Cab arranged the airport pickup, temple visit and all transfers perfectly. The Ayurveda massage was the cherry on top. Absolutely loved it!

I came for a solo Ayurveda retreat at Kovalam. The driver from Hire Himachal recommended the best certified centre — a week of Panchakarma with daily beach walks restored my health completely. The seafood dinners were extraordinary — freshest fish I've ever tasted. Kovalam is now my annual wellness escape!

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Q
How far is Kovalam from Trivandrum Airport?
Kovalam is just 16 km from Trivandrum International Airport (TRV) — approximately 30–40 minutes by road. It is one of the most airport-accessible beach destinations in India. Our driver picks up directly from the arrival terminal and drives you straight to your beach hotel. Trivandrum railway station is 14 km away.
Q
What are the three Kovalam beaches?
Lighthouse Beach (southernmost) — the most developed bay with restaurants, surf schools and the famous lighthouse. Hawa Beach (centre) — quieter, better for swimming with calmer water. Eve's Beach (northernmost) — the most secluded and least developed. All three are connected by a coastal path and walkable from each other.
Q
Is surfing possible at Kovalam?
Yes — Kovalam is one of the best beginner surfing spots in India. The consistent Arabian Sea swells are ideal for learning, especially November through March. Multiple surf schools on Lighthouse Beach offer 2-hour beginner lessons for ₹800–1,500. No experience needed. The beach break is friendly and instructors are experienced.
Q
Can we visit Padmanabhaswamy Temple from Kovalam?
Yes — Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Trivandrum is 16 km from Kovalam (30–40 mins). It is open to Hindus only. Strict dress code applies — men must wear dhoti (no shirts), women must wear saree or churidar. The temple is famous for its 8-foot reclining Vishnu idol and its legendary vaults said to contain treasures worth trillions. Our driver will coordinate the visit.
Q
Can we combine Kovalam with Varkala or Alleppey?
Absolutely — two great combos: Kovalam + Varkala is a 5-day Kerala beach circuit (55 km apart, ~1.5 hrs) — two completely different beach personalities. Kovalam + Alleppey (190 km, ~4 hrs) gives beach + backwater in one Kerala trip. Contact us for the combined package price and we'll design the perfect circuit.

About Kovalam

Kovalam – Kerala's Lighthouse Bay

Kovalam is Kerala's most famous beach resort — a 17 km coastline of three consecutive crescent bays just 16 km from Trivandrum. The Lighthouse Beach (the northernmost bay) is the most active and vibrant — flanked by a long promenade of hotels, Ayurveda centres and seafood restaurants, crowned by the iconic 150-year-old red-and-white lighthouse that guests can climb for panoramic views of the coastline.

The Hawa Beach (Lighthouse Beach's southern extension) and Samudra Beach (northernmost, calmer) offer quieter alternatives. What makes Kovalam special beyond the beaches is its deep integration of Ayurveda — dozens of certified centres offer everything from a 60-minute oil massage to a full 14-day Panchakarma rejuvenation programme.

Kovalam's proximity to Trivandrum city (16 km) adds significant value — the city's stunning Padmanabhaswamy Temple (one of India's wealthiest), Napier Museum, Zoological Gardens and the Kerala state government buildings (designed by Laurie Baker) make it a compelling day trip from the beach.

Travel Tips

Essential Tips for Kovalam

Best: Oct–Mar

October to March is ideal — calm seas perfect for swimming, clear skies for stunning sunsets. Kovalam's surf season is September–March. Avoid June–September when Kerala monsoon brings huge waves and red/yellow flag warnings — swimming is prohibited during peak monsoon.

Respect Flag Warnings

Kovalam beach has a clear flag warning system — green (safe), yellow (caution), red (dangerous, no swimming). Always obey these warnings. Kovalam has experienced strong undercurrents that have claimed lives. Swim between the designated flags and near the lifeguard posts.

Choose Ayurveda Carefully

Kovalam has many Ayurveda centres ranging from genuine to tourist-oriented. Look for centres with trained Kerala Ayurveda doctors and Kerala Ayurveda certification. Avoid places offering massage by unskilled workers. Your hotel reception can recommend reputable centres. Book your slot on Day 1.

Eat the Fresh Seafood

Kovalam's promenade restaurants are famous for choose-your-own-fish dining — select your catch from the display and specify the cooking method (grilled, Kerala curry, butter garlic). The tiger prawns, karimeen pollichathu and seer fish are outstanding. Prices are very reasonable compared to major cities.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Q
How far is Kovalam from Trivandrum Airport?
Kovalam is just 16 km from Trivandrum International Airport (TRV) — approximately 30 minutes by road. This makes it one of Kerala's most easily accessible beach destinations. Our driver picks you up directly from arrivals and has you on the beach within half an hour of landing.
Q
Is Kovalam safe for swimming?
Kovalam is safe for swimming during October–March (calm sea season) when green and yellow flags are up. The beach has trained lifeguards during these months. Always swim between the flag posts and never ignore red flag warnings. The northern Samudra Beach section tends to be calmer than Lighthouse Beach, making it better for children and weak swimmers.
Q
What water sports are available at Kovalam?
Kovalam offers surfing lessons (one of India's oldest surf scenes — great for beginners), parasailing (thrilling tandem flight over the bay), jet skiing, banana boat rides, kayaking and glass-bottom boat rides. Surfing and parasailing are the most popular. Water sports are best October–March; operators close during monsoon. Prices are very reasonable.
Q
Can we combine Kovalam with Varkala or Alleppey?
Absolutely — two great combinations: Kovalam + Varkala (55 km, 1.5 hrs) is a perfect 4-day dual-beach Kerala circuit — crescent bay meets dramatic cliffs. Kovalam + Alleppey (150 km, 3 hrs) gives you beach + backwaters in 5–6 days. Our driver covers the full circuit seamlessly. Contact us for combined package pricing.
Q
Is the Padmanabhaswamy Temple open to all visitors?
The main sanctum of Padmanabhaswamy Temple is open to Hindus only. Visitors must wear traditional attire (dhoti for men, saree or churidar for women — available for rental near the temple). Non-Hindu visitors can admire the stunning 16th-century gopuram (tower) from outside, which is itself an impressive sight. The surrounding East Fort area and markets are open to all.
