About the Pilgrimage
Ayodhya is one of the seven most sacred cities in Hinduism and the birthplace of Lord Ram — the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu and the hero of the epic Ramayana. Situated on the banks of the holy Saryu River in Uttar Pradesh, Ayodhya has been a major pilgrimage destination for thousands of years.
The historic inauguration of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple (Ram Mandir) on January 22, 2024 marked a momentous moment in India's cultural and spiritual history. The magnificent temple complex — built in Nagara style architecture using pink sandstone from Rajasthan — now stands at the exact site where Lord Ram was born, drawing millions of pilgrims from across India and the world.
Beyond the Ram Mandir, Ayodhya offers a rich spiritual circuit: Hanuman Garhi (the fort-temple of Lord Hanuman), Kanak Bhawan (where Sita and Ram's golden idols reside), Dashrath Mahal, the ancient Nageshwarnath Temple, and the deeply moving evening aarti on the Saryu River ghats.
Key Highlights
Ayodhya's spiritual circuit encompasses temples, ghats and holy sites that bring the Ramayana alive for every pilgrim.
The grand new Ram Mandir, inaugurated on January 22, 2024, is built in Nagara architectural style using pink Rajasthani sandstone. It stands at the exact spot where Lord Ram was born, replacing centuries of waiting with a magnificent spiritual monument.
A 76-step climb leads to this commanding hilltop fort-temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman — the divine protector and devotee of Ram. One of the most visited temples in Ayodhya, believed to grant wishes to devotees who pray with a sincere heart.
Legend holds that this was the private palace gifted by Queen Kaikeyi to Sita and Ram as a wedding gift. The ornate temple houses exquisitely decorated golden idols of Sita and Ram, considered among the most beautiful in all of Ayodhya.
The holy Saryu River flows through Ayodhya, and its ghats come alive every evening with a spectacular aarti ceremony — similar in grandeur to the Ganga Aarti in Varanasi. Ram Ki Paidi (the main ghat complex) is beautifully illuminated at night.
Day-by-Day Plan
A complete 2-day spiritual journey through the birthplace of Lord Ram — temples, ghats, and the divine Saryu River aarti.
Arrive in Ayodhya from Lucknow (135 km), Varanasi (200 km) or Delhi (650 km). Check in to hotel near Ram Ki Paidi. Begin at Hanuman Garhi — seek Lord Hanuman's blessings before Ram darshan, as tradition holds this is essential first. Proceed to the magnificent Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple — darshan at the main sanctum where Ram Lalla resides. Explore the expansive 70-acre temple complex. Evening visit to Ram Ki Paidi for the spectacular Saryu River Aarti — watch priests perform the ritual with fire lamps at the ghat's edge. Overnight Ayodhya.
Early morning holy dip at Saryu Ghat. Visit Kanak Bhawan — the golden palace temple with its breathtaking Sita–Ram idols. Continue to Dashrath Mahal (palace of King Dashrath), Nageshwarnath Temple (the only ancient temple believed to have survived from Treta Yuga), and Tulsi Smarak Bhawan — dedicated to Tulsidas who composed the Ramcharitmanas. Explore the Ramayana Museum (optional). Post-lunch departure with divine blessings of Shri Ram.

Traveller Guidance
Ram Navami (April) is the most auspicious time — the entire city transforms with festivals, processions and millions of devotees. Book accommodation and transport 2–3 months in advance for Ram Navami visits.
The Ram Ki Paidi ghat complex is spectacularly illuminated at night. The evening Saryu Aarti, starting around sunset, is a soul-stirring experience. Arrive 30 minutes early to secure a good spot near the ghat.
Security checks at the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple complex are thorough. Carry a valid government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar or passport). Mobile phones and bags may require deposit at the cloakroom near the entrance.
Crowds at the Ram Mandir can be very large, especially on weekends. Aim for the Mangala Aarti slot (early morning, check timings) for the most peaceful darshan experience with shorter queues.
