Aru Valley – Pahalgam's Hidden Camping Gem

Aru Valley is a serene, scenic valley located approximately 12 km from Pahalgam town, sitting at an altitude of around 2,414 metres. Far less crowded than its famous neighbour Betaab Valley, Aru offers a quieter, more pristine alpine experience — open meadows, gushing glacial streams and panoramic views of distant snow peaks, making it one of Kashmir's most ideal valleys for camping, trekking and photography.

From Srinagar, Aru Valley is reached via Pahalgam, a drive of roughly 3–3.5 hours through saffron fields, apple orchards and pine-lined mountain roads. The final stretch from Pahalgam to Aru winds along the Lidder valley through dense forest, opening suddenly into wide green meadows ringed by towering peaks.

Aru is also the base camp for some of Kashmir's most rewarding treks — the trail to Kolahoi Glacier (often called the "Glacier of Shiva") and the high-altitude Tarsar-Marsar twin lakes both begin here. Even for travellers not trekking onward, an evening spent camping in Aru's meadows under a sky full of stars is an unforgettable Kashmir experience.
