About the Pilgrimage
The 12 Jyotirlingas (Dwadash Jyotirlinga) are the twelve most sacred manifestations of Lord Shiva, housed in temples spread across India — from Gujarat in the west to Tamil Nadu in the south, Uttarakhand in the north to Bengal in the east. According to the Shiva Purana, these are the spots where Lord Shiva himself appeared as an infinite column of light (Jyoti), establishing his supreme divine presence for eternity.
Completing the Dwadash Jyotirlinga Yatra is considered one of the most meritorious acts a Shiva devotee can perform — believed to wash away all sins and lead to liberation. Our car-based 12 Jyotirlinga circuit covers all twelve shrines in an organised 15–20 day journey, including Somnath, Mallikarjuna, Mahakaleshwar, Omkareshwar, Kedarnath, Bhimashankar, Vishweshwar (Kashi), Trimbakeshwar, Vaidyanath, Nageshwar, Rameshwaram and Grishneshwar.
We plan the most efficient route covering all 12, with comfortable AC vehicle, experienced driver familiar with multi-state routes, and 24/7 support throughout the journey.
The Sacred Twelve
Each Jyotirlinga is a unique manifestation of Lord Shiva with distinct mythology, architecture, and spiritual significance. Here is the complete sacred list:
The first and most revered Jyotirlinga, on the shores of the Arabian Sea. Rebuilt 17 times after repeated destruction — a symbol of resilience and eternal faith.
Situated on the Srisailam Hill on the banks of the Krishna River. One of only two shrines that is simultaneously a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Pitha.
One of the most powerful Jyotirlingas — famous for the daily Bhasma Aarti (ash ritual) performed at dawn. Ujjain is also the site of the Kumbh Mela every 12 years.
On an island shaped like the sacred Om symbol in the Narmada River. The twin shrines of Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar together complete this Jyotirlinga.
At 3,584 m in the Himalayas — part of the Char Dham circuit. The ancient stone temple is open only May–November. Helicopter service available from Phata/Sersi.
In the Sahyadri hills, this Jyotirlinga is the origin of the Bhima River. Surrounded by dense forest — home to the Indian Giant Squirrel (state animal of Maharashtra).
The Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi — the spiritual capital of India. One of the most visited Jyotirlingas, recently transformed by the grand Kashi Vishwanath Corridor.
Near the source of the holy Godavari River at the foot of Brahmagiri Mountain. Known for the Kumbh Mela held at Nashik every 12 years and ancestral rites performed here.
Also known as Baidyanath Dham — one of the 51 Shakti Pithas. During Shravan month, millions of kanwariyas carry Ganga water 108 km from Sultanganj to offer here.
Near the sacred city of Dwarka — one of the four dhams established by Adi Shankaracharya. Famous for the colossal 25-metre statue of Lord Shiva in meditation.
The southernmost Jyotirlinga, on an island in the Palk Strait. Lord Ram is said to have worshipped Shiva here before his assault on Lanka. Famous for its 1,200-metre corridors.
The last of the 12 Jyotirlingas, near Ellora and the Ajanta Caves. The ancient Hemadpanthi-style temple is modest in size but immense in spiritual significance.
Route Plan
Our recommended route covers all 12 Jyotirlingas in the most efficient sequence, minimising backtracking across 7 states.
Begin at Somnath — the first and most revered Jyotirlinga on the Arabian Sea coast. Evening aarti at the sea-facing temple. Next day drive to Dwarka (230 km) — visit the ancient Dwarkadhish Temple, then Nageshwar Jyotirlinga with its colossal 25-metre Shiva statue. Overnight Dwarka/Somnath.
Drive to Ujjain (~550 km from Dwarka). Early morning Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar — the most powerful aarti in all of Shaivism, performed with sacred ash. Explore Ujjain's ghats and Kal Bhairav Temple. Next morning drive to Omkareshwar (130 km) — take the boat to the Om-shaped island, visit both Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar shrines on the Narmada banks. Overnight.
Drive to Bhimashankar (Pune hills) — the forest-clad Jyotirlinga in the Sahyadri range, origin of the Bhima River. Continue to Nashik — visit Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga at the source of the Godavari. Next day to Aurangabad — Grishneshwar near the Ellora Caves. Optional visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Ellora & Ajanta Caves. Overnight Aurangabad.
Drive south to Srisailam (~560 km from Aurangabad). The Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga sits on the Nallamala Hills above the Krishna River — simultaneously a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Pitha (dedicated to Goddess Bhramaramba). The dense forest setting and the hilltop temple create an overwhelmingly sacred atmosphere. Overnight Srisailam.
Drive to Rameswaram (~600 km from Srisailam). The southernmost Jyotirlinga — on an island in the Palk Strait. Take a ritual bath at Agni Teertham (the sea ghat). Darshan at the magnificent Ramanathaswamy Temple with its 1,200-metre corridors and 22 sacred wells (teerthams). Visit Dhanushkodi — the dramatic land's end. Overnight Rameswaram.
Fly or drive north to Deoghar, Jharkhand. Visit Baidyanath Dham — famous for the Shravan month pilgrimage when millions of kanwariyas carry Ganga water 108 km from Sultanganj to offer at this shrine. Explore the temple complex of 22 linked temples in the Baidyanath compound. Overnight Deoghar.
Drive to Varanasi — darshan at Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga (Vishweshwar) via the new Corridor. Evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat. Next morning, drive/fly to Kedarnath base — trek or take helicopter to the Kedarnath Jyotirlinga at 3,584 m in the Himalayas (open May–November only). Overnight Kedarnath/Guptkashi. Note: Kedarnath is also part of the Char Dham Yatra.
Drive back to Delhi / starting point via Haridwar. The Dwadash Jyotirlinga Yatra is now complete — an achievement that bestows immense spiritual merit according to the Shiva Purana. Rest, prasad distribution and celebratory aarti before dispersal. Tour concludes with the eternal blessings of Baba Mahakal. Har Har Mahadev!

Traveller Guidance
Kedarnath is open only May–November. Plan your complete circuit around this window. The ideal period is October–November — Kedarnath before closure, then proceed south through winter. Avoid Shravan month for Vaidyanath (massive crowds).
The 12 Jyotirlingas span 7 states. A poorly planned route means massive backtracking. Our recommended order — Gujarat → MP → Maharashtra → Andhra → Tamil Nadu → Jharkhand → UP → Uttarakhand — is the most efficient circuit from any north Indian city.
The pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar (Ujjain) is one of the most extraordinary religious experiences in all of Hinduism. Pre-booking is mandatory — book online via the temple website weeks in advance. This aarti alone justifies the entire journey.
You will cross multiple state borders and enter several high-security temples. Carry at least 2 copies each of Aadhaar, passport photos, and your vehicle RC/insurance. Some temples require identity proof for darshan. Keep digital copies on your phone as backup.
Pilgrim Stories
The Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar at 4 AM changed my life. Hire Himachal Cab planned the entire 18-day circuit seamlessly — the same driver throughout, who knew every temple route. Completing all 12 Jyotirlingas was a dream I had for 20 years. Har Har Mahadev!
A group of 8 devotees — we completed the Dwadash Jyotirlinga Yatra in 17 days by Tempo Traveller. Hire Himachal Cab's planning was impeccable — hotels pre-arranged at every stop, driver knew alternate routes when roads were blocked. Somnath at sunrise was otherworldly.
We did the South Circuit — Rameshwaram, Mallikarjuna, Bhimashankar, Trimbakeshwar and Grishneshwar in 10 days. The driver navigated unfamiliar south Indian roads with great confidence. Rameshwaram's 22 teertham wells were deeply purifying. Perfect service throughout!
